Outdoor Craftsmen designers don’t ascribe to the idea that straight lines in the landscape look too ‘formal’ or ‘unnatural’. Indeed, straight lines can be quite attractive when contrasted with their counterpart ‘curves’ and are an effective way of drawing our attention to special areas of a property.
We wouldn’t design an awkwardly curved path when a straight one from driveway to home is more practical, and economical, and draws our attention to a gorgeous front door. The sides of the pathway can be softened with plantings and well-positioned outdoor lights.
We see curves and straight lines equally as options in landscape design and use both to meld home and landscape synergistically.
We are attentive to a principle of physics that benefits landscape design greatly: line of sight. When we direct our sight in a specific direction, we naturally do so along a ‘line’ to that object, and when we do, light will come from the object to our eye along the line of sight.
The focal points we design to attract the eye can be as simple as a planter filled with gorgeous color and texture, or as extravagant as a one-of-a-kind sculpture or fountain. What matters most is that the natural environment be purposefully inviting, surprising, and wonderful.
